confused now

Hate to sound stupid but not having ever been there, this all sounds greek to me. My objective is to arrive a day or 2 before my ship leaves, see Venice, get a gondola ride and then board ship. Where is the most convenient place to stay to meet all these objectives and not have to get a taxi more than necessary.
