Wonderful trip!

Posted by Sharon P on 06/11/2007

We're back in Texas, Kathy! The trip was just wonderful. The students and I all left wishing we had more time in Bath, Brighton, and especially Stratford-upon-Avon. That's the way I like them to feel --"give me more!"

Allison Plater was really a great tour guide. She was very knowledgeable, full of history and fun facts about England. I found her soft spoken and easy going, and thought she handled the kids so well. They remarked that she never got "mad at them," even when she might have had reason to -- you know how kids are. She was so organized and accommodating. She even had music and DVD's ready to set the mood for each stop on our coach trip. That was an unexpected surprise! The hotels were spectacular - rooms clean, roomy, and with really great breakfasts each morning. The small hotel in Stratford was 500 years old! After the big, luxury hotels in London and Brighton, the White Swan was truly an experience in old world living that I'm glad we were able to have. The low ceilings with huge timbers and the warren of passageways was so different from anything my students or I had ever had. The meals were good, too. We started each day with full English breakfast, a pleasant surprise since I really was only expecting continental breakfasts. The carvery dinner in London was amazing, and the kids just ate and ate! Then we had bangers and mash in Brighton - that's always a crowd pleaser and everyone enjoyed it. The fish and chips meal was adequate for jet lagged Americans, but I have had better and could recommend a better place just off Victoria Station. There might have been a few too many baked chickens along the way, but that was my one and only criticism of the whole trip. English pub food being what it is, I'm aware that England isn't a real winner in the food area. France and Italy might be on my list for 2009 and their food just seems to have more variety. It was really just a great, great trip! Thanks for all your help. Please tell Allison how much we enjoyed it all. I'll be in touch to start setting up for 2009 when we'll be going again. Whew, I'm tired. Please excuse the typos and ramblings. We had a great time! Cheers, Sharon
